Alan Welsby
After a short illness one of England's International Referees, Alan Welsby died on August 9 at the age of 69. A member of the Manchester Society since 1962, Alan officiated at some sixteen international matches, a somewhat  outstanding feat at that time when, the furthest he was likely to travel, was Paris. Always a commanding figure on the park, he was a stickler for the Law and woe betide any offender. He received little trouble after making his reputation when sending off four players in a B International in Dublin.
Alan was at various times Chairman of Manchester, on the Northern Group which he represented on the RFU Referees' Sub-Committee and later on the RFU International Referee Selection Committee. Many referees outside Manchester owe much to this outstanding servant of Ruby Football and learnt much from his wise Advice and considered Assessments. Remembered in Durham attending the Hatfield Conferences.
